Rosacea is a medically unsatisfied chronic inflammatory condition that primarily affects the facial skin of an estimated 14 million Americans.  Currently, the cause of rosacea is unknown and there is no cure for the disease.  Therefore, the goal for the treatment of the disorder is to reduce its signs and symptoms.  The clinical signs and symptoms of rosacea include: facial flushing, telangiectasia, facial erythema, central facial inflammatory papules and pustules, hypertrophy of the sebaceous glands of the nose, and ocular changes.  None of the treatments available currently treat all of these signs and symptoms, and their length of treatment can be limited due to undesirable side effects.  Current treatment options still leave patients and physicians seeking better alternatives that offer faster onset of activity, minimal irritation and the ability to reduce the erythema (reddening of the skin) associated with rosacea.

Rosacea typically occurs in people ranging from 30 to 50 years of age, and it is more common in women than men.  According to surveys conducted by the National Rosacea Society, nearly 70% of rosacea patients said this condition had lowered their self-confidence and self-esteem, and 41% reported it had caused them to avoid public contact or cancel social engagements. The market is estimated to exceed $200 million annually.
